Choosing Courses
Time allocation
Subject teaching will take place over approximately 10 hours per fortnight for each subject. In addition to this all students are expected in all subjects to spend a significant amount of their own time on independent study, research and homework set by their teacher.
Choosing courses
Choosing the right courses is an important decision as a student’s future options, including career could depend upon it. Students should take a number of factors into account before making a final decision, including;
• choosing subjects they feel most enthusiastic and confident about.
• thinking carefully about the advice of their own teachers, tutors and careers advisors.
• looking carefully at the requirements of universities, colleges and degree courses they are interested in. Some universities and colleges do declare a preference for certain subjects.
• thinking about the assessment methods of the different types of courses. Students that find examinations particularly difficult might consider taking BTEC or similar courses on which much of the assessment is by coursework.
• considering which subjects fit well together. Some subjects support each other well, while students may wish to think about other combinations very carefully because of the large amount of written work or assessment
• researching fully into the courses that are on offer. Read the information about the courses we offer. Speak to teachers of the subjects you are interested in.
