Student Voice Blog
January 2012
Since the last time we blogged, we have had loads going on.
Student Governance had their first meeting with the Principal, giving Ms Farrell an update of all of our departments. The meeting was fantastic; we covered a range of issues, discussing future plans for the Academy which sounds really exciting. Issues such as vending machines for pupils and the length of lunch times were debated.
House Council members did another presentation, this time to the Parent Forum. This went extremely well with all of us answering questions posed to us by intrigued parents.
All of Student Voice did a presentation to the whole Academy, highlighting their role and how they support the Academy in many ways, from teaching and learning to behaviour and support.
Learning Consultants wrapped up the term by displaying their expertise in the Teaching Lab to the Schools Commissioner for England, Liz Sidwell. They were a credit to the Academy, as always.
September 2011
We have had a busy start to the year already; Open Evening went extremely well with help from all of Student Voice. Head Boy, Head Girl, their deputies and Prefects were on hand to show pupils from our local Primary schools and their parents around the Academy.
Learning Consultants demonstrated one of our newest additions to the Academy, the Teachers Lab. Over the summer we have had a room converted into a spectacular learning environment, with iPads, iPods and many other unique facilities to enhance learning here at OSCA.
Student Governance students were on hand to support all pupils and parents throughout the night and expressed how we value Student Voice in the Academy.
House Council members have had three meetings already, planning for the future here at OSCA, exciting and innovative ideas already being discussed and a full Student Governance meeting with the Principal is scheduled soon, so watch this space for our updates.
July 2011
This year we have set up a Peer Mentoring Scheme, pupils who help other pupils with any issues of concern. We interviewed and selected Learning Consultants; they are trained to contribute to the development of learning in the classroom. They meet every week to plan and prepare for their focus for the following week, they work closely with Mr Wagstaff, the Lead for Teacher development and Mrs Stucki, Vice Principal.
House Council is probably the best way to make your views heard. We are gearing ourselves up for an election next week, to elect new House Council members for next year. Our teacher is planning to take them to London to visit Parliament, the engine room behind democracy in Britain.
Our Environment Secretary has selected her own team and this week has begun her recycling campaign. The team will collect recyclable material every week in the hope we become a ‘Greener Academy’.
Head Boy and Head Girl have been installed and they have picked their Prefects for next year too. They are all on week experience this week but once they return, they will take over their duties and will be supported by the able Deputies.
All of this is overseen by Student Governance. We have one member of Student Governance in each area, they have to brief me and the other members of Student Governance about what their departments are doing and how well they are progressing.
Check our blog next week to find out how our House Council elections went and if OSCA is becoming a Greener Academy!!
