Learning Support

Special Educational Needs

Students with Special Educational Needs, from Year 7 through to Year 13, will find support available from teachers and Learning Support staff. A key strand of their work is the development of literacy skills, but students may also be supported in lessons in a range of subjects, to give them full access to the curriculum and to develop their skills effectively. Students with SEN in Year 7 are taught, by an SEN teacher, in a small core group for English, Maths, Science, MFL and Humanities.

The Academy also meets the needs of students with physical difficulties, social interaction and communication difficulties, specific learning difficulties and behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. Students in Key Stage 3 with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties are supported through Oasis Nurture groups.

In meeting these needs the Academy seeks to ensure that the curriculum is accessible, relevant, engaging, enjoyable, progressive and capable of leading to achievement.

The Success Centre

The team of Learning Mentors, based in the Success Centre, offer support to all students. Mentors support a wide range of individual students’ needs including:  academic progress, attendance, and behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. Support may be delivered through informal drop in sessions, or through an individually tailored support programme.
The Success Centre also offers a range of out of hour’s activities, including:  breakfast club, after school/homework club and Summer School and holiday activities.
