Maths & ICT Blog
Well it's been another busy term for the Maths Department. We have appointed a new member of Staff, Mrs B Alexander will start after half term on a part-time basis, and full time from September. She will also be doing intervention work with Year 7, 8 & 9 students.
We had 8 students achieving either Bronze, silver or gold status in the United Kingdom Junior Maths Challenge last month, so congratulations to all of them.
We had had another set of GCSE results in from March, and this has now taken our A* - C pass rate up to 59%, with the addition of some top quality passes, seven grade A and two grade A* !!
The final push for Year 11 exams will be on 11th and 13th June, and we wish them all the very best with their quest.
It has been another exciting time here in the Maths department. We have had our November 2011 Year 11 exam results in, and half of the whole cohort managed to achieve a grade C or higher pass!! As first attempts go, this is a new record for the department, but we are not resting yet! There is a resit exam taking place very soon, for the year 11 students that didn’t secure a “C” last time, and also for those students that did to try and build and improve on that grade.
Two year 9 students have also done very well in achieving a Bronze certificate in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge in February.
We have also launched the “Maths Puzzle of the Fortnight” for all academy students to have a go at. The puzzles will be available on Youtube, so make sure you have a look!
Here in the Faculty we have had another year of extremely encouraging examination results at Key Stage 4.
In ICT there has been a 100% pass rate in the Key Stage 4 course, and a 100 % success rate at Key Stage 5 in the sixth form.
Within Maths, we achieved our highest ever number of top grade passes at GCSE, with 10% of last year’s cohort achieving A* or A grades in their exam. 56% of our students achieved an A*-C grade, and 100% of students achieved an A* - G grade.
The current year 11 students are currently extremely busy, preparing for their November GCSE exam in Maths, and we are going to extreme lengths in the department in order to support our students, with study support running every week, a half term class and a Saturday class all being offered for the first time!
Hello and welcome to our first Maths and ICT blog!
We are coming to the close of a very busy term, not least due to the GCSE exams that have just been completed. Fingers crossed for the results in August!
In the November exams, we were particularly successful at the top end of the scale in GCSE Maths, with 4 A* and 11 A grades being achieved.
There has also been Key Stage 3 success at both local and national level, with successes in the Sandwell schools Maths Olympiad, and the United Kingdom Junior Maths Challenge.
Please make sure you check out this blog in the new term, for full details of our Study Support and Intervention Programmes.
Whilst on a celebratory note, we would like to congratulate the ICT department on achieving a 100% pass rate in the OCR National course, with some students exceeding expectations and gaining 3 or 4 GCSE equivalents in ICT.
Two post 16 students have gained places at University as a direct result of their ICT studies.
On a technical note, three ICT classrooms are being refurbished with brand new machines installed, in fact the whole academy has had new Windows and Office software installed.
